There are many places to Wakeboard and many different ways to do it. When it comes to the sport of wakeboarding that is what I enjoy the most about it. Every time you leave the house you can head to a different location and ride a different style of wakeboarding such as cable wakeboarding, riding behind a boat, or the newest thing winch riding.
Riding behind a boat is the most common way to wakeboard. It dates back to 1989 when the first board was shaped by Tony Finn, and by 1991 we had our first organized contest then it’s all history from there. Riding behind a boat can bring friends and family alike together. There is something about the atmosphere it creates and the possibilities on where to ride are endless. One reason I moved back down to the San Marcos area is for the abundance of clean lakes around here. In this area it is very possible to hit a few different spots in the same weekend. For example we have Lake Placid, Lake Dunlap, Lake Mcqueeney, Canyon Lake, Lake Austin, and Lake Travis all with in an hour. I’m sure I missed a few along the way because this area is packed full of good clean water. Even if you don’t have a boat there are ways to go about it. You can always hit up a friend. Just make sure you always pitch in a little for gas. Owning a boat is not a cheep process. If none of your friends have a boat you can always rent one up on Lake Austin or Travis for relatively cheep. Or you can always go hit up one of the local wakeboarding schools. Billy Garcia is a good friend of mine and provides amazing instruction at a really low-cost. (freeridewake.com) But the possibilities of wakeboarding don’t even start to end behind the boat.
Riding cable has been around in germany for years and years for skiing. In the past ten years the cable seen has shifted to wakeboarding and has come to the States. Here in our backyard we have the Texas Ski Ranch. This is a fun place to be considering it has it all. You can ride behind your choice of a bigger cable or the “lil bro” as they call it. The big cable where you can hit jumps and hit sliders or just catch killer air off the water. TSR also has the biggest board shop in the area. Don’t be fooled with the name you can buy anything here. They are a major competitor with the outlet mall selling everything from Toms to the freshest gear on the streets. They are also in the process of building a sports bar upstairs that will have a full bar!!! and TVs everywhere. The cable seen has really exploded in the last few years and cable parks are popping up every where. Here in Texas we will have four built by the end of the year between here and Dallas. But again the sport doesn’t stop here.
The newest craze in the sport that got Texas on the map is Winch Riding. essentually you have a portable pulley system that you can anchor down anywhere. This means you can hit spots on rivers with only a few inches of water. You can jump off waterfalls or even slide on trees. It’s wakeboarding with your surrounding natural elements. This is a very fun aspect of the sport but only for the experienced. It is very dangerous with the rushing currents and sharp rocks around. But this doesn’t stop a small community of riders from doing it. One of my good friends Gabe Lucas happens to reside here in town. He is one of the innovators of the winch riding sport and responsible for getting Texas on the map in the sport. He graduated from Texas State and owns the Rukus Skate Shop here in town. He has made the River Pub Dam a must travel to destination for winch riders. The possibilities are endless anywhere any time with anyone. Check it out.
The sport of wakeboarding is responsible for every decision I have made in the past 13 years and I will always carry the sport with me no matter where I end up. The fact that I have the possibility to ride somewhere new in a different way every day just gets me all fired up on the sport and hope you all can feel a little bit of the heat!
